Modern architecture and design in Dallas, TX
So we are days away from welcoming our little baby girl. Amy picked out some wonderful modern baby furniture from Baby Bliss in Dallas. Simple white and neutral colors create the perfect palette for the soon-to-be onslaught of brightly colored plastic toys that will no dought cover the entire room at some point.
It’s that time of year to get out and play. It took us most of late winter to finish up the large retaining walls in the backyard. They are 40′ long runs of black lueders limestone. The 18″ x 18″ x 5′ blocks do a great job of holding everything back and defining a beautiful flat terrace of zoysia turf. The remainder of the sloped backyard is planted with Texas sage, mexican feather grass, purple fountain grass, orange african bulbine, rosemary, and a variety of other succulents.
When it’s a 100 degrees in the shade, nothing beats the new pool. Pepper our dog thinks we built it just for her. We’ve taught her how to do laps, drink from the fountains and float on her little inflatable. Riverbend Sandler did a great job with the pool and the brilliant architecture of the Buchanan team provides such a wonderful wow factor as guests enter the house via the cantilevered floating glass vestibule and they get there first glimpse of the pool as they cross over the bridge.
The main living room has turned out to be one of our favorite spaces in the house. It has wonderful natural light from the floor-to-ceiling windows and the mass of the stairwell that protrudes into the space provides a great architectural detail. The massive black ebony cabinet also makes for wonderful eye candy as you enter the space. All of that is balanced by some nice quiet design moments that happen in conjunction with the architecture. The curtains are a fantastically simple linen created by Katherine D Interiors of Dallas. Lots and lots of kudos to Katherine and her team. They were amazing to work with and incredibly skilled at what they do.
Guest bedroom is nearing completion. As a wink to Amy’s love of books and floor-to-ceiling book shelves, we cover an entire wall in pages from old classics. It’s the best bedtime story(s) you could hope for.
OK, so it’s been awhile since the last post, but the house is now fully finished and the dust has settled. So it’s on to interior design. Here are a few pics of the kitchen and dining area of the home. The cement plaster walls and wood finished ceilings turned out great. Lots of thanks to the Buchanan Architecture team for their vision and oversight of the project.
We received our final CO (certificate of occupancy) today so let the moving boxes fly. The kitchen area looks fantastic. The ebony stained master cabinet adds a nice anchoring element to the downstairs area. The kitchen side houses pantry, fridge, and the ovens while the backside of the cabinet system carries the AV equipment and entertainment system for the main living room. Plenty of counter space should make for great entertaining.
Master bath is close to completion. Lights, plumbing and HVAC passed all their inspections and we’re ready for a few additional clean ups and final detailing to complete the bath. The wet enclosure includes a WET style tub and a matching WET style double sink vanity atop n ebony stained rift cut white oak cabinet. The Artemide basic strip light capping the mirror adds a beautiful glow to the room.
We just passed electrical inspection and the upstairs hallway is now fully lit.
The guest bedrooms upstairs are very close to completion. The main bedroom doors use a beautiful Boomer floor and ceiling door hinge that creates a seamless and hingless entry to the bedrooms. The floor to ceiling cabinetry define the closet system and add plenty of storage. The clear acrylic Artemis ceiling fans add a little fun and drama to the rooms.
